The sense of journey from a mythological to a
geographical context in these images led me to recall Gauguin's
questions, "Who are we?" and "where are we going?" and "where have we
been?" With this in mind the idea of time and history is important to
the imagery. The ideas of these questions are different now than they
were a century ago. The imagery communicates this idea with the
direction and layering of the compositions.
Research into Australian aboriginal art itself
informed my direction of how I wanted to communicate this idea and
develop it in a unique way. The pictures that I have researched into
conceal context and levels of meaning available to the inhibited but
hidden from others. The significance of the pictures can only be
understood by considering them in their context. It is not possible to
read the symbols the contain like the letters of the alphabet; they are
code. The symbols in these images are journey in itself. This is highly
subjective and related to different levels of interpretation.
Communicating the strong reference I had with
Australia aboriginal art helped lead me to the technique of "pouncing"
which allowed me to create dots on the canvas in an accurate way by
using acetate stencils of recognisable artwork. The exploration of this
process developed with ink and bleach using palettes and different
scales.
