“It is the feeling of mood and spirit of an image that I try to capture, that particular quality of the subject as well as the likeness. Whether this concerns a flood of light, seed heads blowing across a landscape or a pattern of cast shadows, there is always something particular that sets the atmosphere in images that interest me. With figures it is a sense of mobility and poise, with flowers a sense of delicacy yet firmness of form, with landscapes and garden scenes a feeling of light at a particular time of day. In short, painting for me is concerned with identifying what really interests me in an image and then trying to fully express this and retain it throughout the process of a painting” Nicholas Bristow.
