LEN WAGHORN

Len Waghom was born in Greenwich in 1927 and can remember when, aged about 5, the family doctor Dr. Argo gave him a shilling for a drawing he did of the Doctor on a piece of his grandfather's plywood.

After an engineering apprenticeship and national service in the RAF as an engine mechanic, he was employed by the Tothill Street Press as a technical illustrator, eventually returning as a draughtsman, designer, chief draughtsman at various firms in SE London, Kent and Surrey until retirement in 1992.

Between 1951-1969 he was a member of the original design team for the first electronic Pilot's Head Up Display (HUD) equipment installed in the Blackburn Buccaneer & Hawker Harrier aircraft.

This Painting is on display in the 'Regatta Cafe' of the National Martitime Museum (NMM) until January 22nd 2007.

The Painting has received a Highly Commended award & prize at the 7th Canvas Clubs annual prize exhibition.

The Canvas Club is the art group of the friends of the NMM.



He is a self-taught artist and has exhibited watercolours at the Bexley Open Art Exhibition, Hall Place, Bexley, Kent for 20 years. He is also a member of the Pier Art Group based in Gravesend which displays artists work at local venues.

He is also a member of the Canvas Club, the art group of the Friends of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. From March 2006 their work will be on display in the Regatta Restaurant of the museum. Previously they had their paintings continuously displayed in the Queens House Gallery. One of his watercolour paintings of the 2003 Thames Barge Race exhibited at the 4th Annual Prize exhibition of the Canvas Club December 2003 received a Highly Commended Award. A 3rd prize was awarded in 2004.

His more recent paintings have been memory-based, relating to Greenwich going back to 1932, the River Thames and undertaking private commissions.
